Building Bridges: Transforming Philanthropy

During Philanthropic Foundations Canada's 2024 National Conference, we had the opportunity to conduct a real time survey with conference attendees. 80 of the 400 attendees, representing a diversity philanthropy and foundation leaders, participated in this interactive activity. The results shed light on the participants’ perceptions of how capital is flowing to diverse leaders and communities, and what’s needed to drive more capital to underfunded and overlooked leaders and communities in the philanthropic sector.

This activity is part of Philanthropic Foundations Canada and New Power Labs strategic partnership to advance justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in capital flows.

While 44% of organizations claim to fund overlooked communities "significantly," the survey shows that we have limited awareness of how much capital actually flows to diverse communities.

When asked how much philanthropic funding was deployed in 2021, the majority of participants answered $2B, while in reality, it was $9.9B.

When asked how much of impact investing went to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour, most participants answered 5%, when in reality, we lack this data.

When asked how much of Canadian philanthropic capital went to women and gender diverse communities, most participants answered 17.3%.

In reality, we lack this data. In 2020, 1.81% of total US charitable giving goes to women’s and girls’ causes.
