The Overton window

The Overton window represents the range of policy ideas the public considers acceptable. This window is constantly shifting, expanding, or shrinking as societal attitudes evolve. 

Those seeking to influence policy often introduce bold, sometimes controversial, ideas to deliberately push the Overton window. Concepts once considered radical, such as marriage equality, can become widely accepted over time. Conversely, ideas that were once mainstream may fall outside the window as society evolves.

The Overton window can also shift in the opposite direction, normalizing harmful ideas. In the Trump era, extreme rhetoric, from anti-science agendas to open attacks on democratic institutions, has moved into mainstream discourse. Through repeated exposure and strategic messaging, positions once deemed unthinkable can gain legitimacy, altering public tolerance and making it more difficult to hold leaders accountable.

Pushing back requires action. Fact-based messaging, coalition-building, and strong media accountability are essential to counter dangerous shifts. Platforms that elevate evidence-based discussions and champion ethical leadership play a crucial role in anchoring the window to principles of progress and inclusion.

Periods of uncertainty can accelerate shifts in the Overton window. It’s more important than ever to remain engaged: challenge misinformation, vote, and support policies designed to unlock prosperity for everyone—not just a privileged few.

It’s up to us to ensure we are shifting toward progress rather than regression.
