The next best step

In times of backlash and high uncertainty, we often call for courage. But courage, as Morgan Simon (Founder, Candide Group) notes, isn't always reserved for the massive, high-risk moves that make headlines. Courage is simply the next best step.

The real threat to progress isn't a single catastrophic decision - it's inertia. It’s the accumulation of small defaults that quietly reinforce the status quo, even when we know it’s not enough.

We often keep capital in big banks and passive index funds, unintentionally funding systems that may misalign with our values.

We rely on one-year funding cycles, shifting the burden of long-term planning and resilience onto grassroots leaders.

We avoid the uncomfortable work of auditing our own portfolios and vendor relationships, allowing bias to operate unnoticed.

Inertia, not malice, is the greatest enemy of equity. It is easier to be cautious and retreat from the difficult work. But the cost of that caution is leaving untapped talent and overlooked leaders on the sidelines.

Courage lives in the next best step. As we gear up for the new year, what would be yours?
