BKR Capital’s Black Startup Funding 2026 Report shows that the share of venture capital (VC) dollars allocated to Black founders across Canada is the lowest it has been in five years.
After peaking at 2.27% in 2023, allocations fell to 0.38% in 2024 and then just 0.15% in 2025, below where they started in 2021.
The report noted that the reversion indicates how VC funding to Black founders was largely driven by the deployment of mission-focused funds, not by a systemic shift in capital allocation.
Structural change requires shifting underwriting norms, sourcing networks, risk models, and decision power, not just deploying parallel pools of capital - which are proven to be simpler to launch but harder to sustain.
