Pay yourself first, that’s the advice entrepreneurs hear all the time.

But in Canada, only 56% of Black business owners were able to pay themselves, compared to 71% of non-Black business owners. Two in three Black entrepreneurs have used their own money to cover business expenses or payroll (Quickbooks, 2022).

When founders can’t pay themselves, entrepreneurship becomes less sustainable.
